Le fiere di modellismo – Hobby exhibitions

Domando scusa se il nuovo articolo arriva dopo un certo periodo di silenzio, ma, da una parte, il lavoro e qualche commessa di pittura mi hanno tenuto più occupato del previsto, dall’altra ho assecondato l’ispirazione per scrivere questo articolo ed ho creato un nuovo profilo sui social network (https://www.eyeem.com/u/menlalavasc).

Anche se ora sono un appassionato modellista, dovete sapere che, in realtà, il settore delle fiere di modellismo è una novità per me. Ovviamente, sono a conoscenza di eventi importanti come Torino Comics, Lucca Comics, Euro Roma, Monte San Savino, Stresa ed alcune altre fiere o esposizioni in Francia, in Germania o negli Stati Uniti, ma un po’ per mancanza di fondi ed un po’ per mancanza di interesse, non mi sono mai recato a nessun evento di questo tipo. Detto ciò, perché ora c’è stata la svolta? Come molti modellisti e giocatori, da ragazzino avevo cominciato a collezionare miniature, ma poi gli impegni scolastici e la pratica di uno sport a livello agonistico, non mi hanno permesso di continuarlo e, purtroppo, le mie miniature hanno preso polvere per quasi dieci anni. Circa quattro anni fa, come testimoniato dal White Dwarf di novembre 2012 nella mia libreria, ho ritrovato la passione per i vari aspetti di questo hobby, in particolare mi riferisco alla cura dei modelli ed alla pittura. Sicuramente si tratta di aspetti meno divertenti rispetto al gioco o al background, ma bisogna anche dire che sono strettamente collegati tra di loro, perché rimuovere tutte le linee di fusione non potrà che andare a vantaggio di qualsiasi stile di pittura, dal più semplice al più elaborato. E qui arriviamo al tema di questo articolo: le fiere e le esposizioni di modellismo. Va da sé che nel nostro caso si tratti di modellismo statico, ma credo che avere la possibilità di visitare qualche fiera di modellismo dinamico (specie quello ferroviario) possa essere altrettanto interessante per trovare degli spunti su come costruire degli scenari di gioco o acquistare del materiale di ottima qualità per decorare le base dei modelli.

Ogni anno, in diversi paesi del mondo vi sono una serie di fiere di modellismo durante le quali molti pittori espongono le proprie opere che vengono divise in categorie e valutate da una giuria di esperti modellisti. Sappiamo bene che il concorso più importante per le sole miniature Citadel è il Golden Daemon organizzato da Games Workshop, il quale assegna le medaglie nelle diverse categorie e l’ambita Slayer sword. Tuttavia, il mondo del modellismo è fatto soprattutto dagli appassionati che si riuniscono in associazioni spesso non molto grandi e che organizzano queste esposizioni. All’inizio di ottobre, si è tenuta al circolo CH4 di Torino la ventesima edizione della mostra “Modellismo che passione” organizzata dal Centro Modellistico Torinese (http://www.cmtonline.it/cmtonline.it/Benvenuto.html). Purtroppo per chi non è un appassionato di modellismo era un po’ difficile trovare dei volantini o delle locandine che pubblicizzassero questo evento, ma per quanto mi riguarda è stato molto interessante ed istruttivo.

Come ho detto prima, non avevo mai visitato nessuna mostra di modellismo né nessun grande evento, quindi è stata la prima in assoluto per me, ma diciamo anche che la dimostrazione di pittura tenuta da un pittore del CMT che conosco (Marco Bosio) ed alcuni pezzi di un altro bravissimo pittore di mia conoscenza (Antonio Bello) mi hanno davvero invogliato ad andare a visitare la mostra. Immaginavo che avrei visto molte miniature di diverse scale dipinte a livello magistrale, ma devo dire che erano davvero moltissime ed avrei trascorso ore ad osservarle da vicino una per una per scoprire tutti i loro dettagli. Per questo motivo, un primo consiglio che mi sentirei di darvi è quello di portare una macchina fotografica, possibilmente una reflex, che abbia un buon flash ed una buona capacità di zoom perché può capitare che le luci siano un po’ basse e, giustamente, è necessario rimanere ad una certa distanza dai modelli per evitare di danneggiarle.

Qualcuno potrebbe pensare che le mostre organizzate dalle associazioni locali non riescano ad attrarre abbastanza espositori e per questo non siano degne di attenzione, ma spesso non è così. Per questa mostra sono arrivati espositori da tutto il Piemonte, alcuni dalla Lombardia, ma anche dalla Francia per un totale di qualche centinaio di pezzi esposti.

Le mostre di questo genere, sovente, sono in grado di offrire nuovi spunti e di ampliare moltissimo gli orizzonti di qualsiasi modellista per diversi motivi. Innanzitutto, c’è la possibilità di conoscere di persona i pittori che espongono e parlare con loro delle tecniche di pittura, delle teorie sul colore o dei metodi per modificare un modello. In secondo luogo, è possibile fare la scoperta di nuove case produttrici di miniature (figurini, busti o veicoli), di colori, di materiali per decorare le basi o i diorami e degli artigiani che producono basi da esposizione di tutte le forme e dimensioni, ma soprattutto è possibile andare in cerca di qualche affare alle bancarelle che non mancano mai. Che sia un libro su tecniche di pittura, la scatola di un modello o qualsiasi altra cosa vi venga in mente, non è raro trovare delle occasioni a prezzi modici. Sostanzialmente è stato questo lo spirito con cui ho visitato la mia prima mostra perché, onestamente, il fatto di creare un singolo modello da esposizione non fa per me. Come ho detto prima e come mostro nelle fotografie e negli articoli che pubblico, dipingere miniature mi piace molto e vorrei anche cimentarmi su modelli di altre case produttrici, ma dato che la mia idea di base del modellismo è legata anche all’uso delle miniature in un gioco, dipingere un singolo modello o una singola squadra per il solo scopo dell’esposizione lo trovo qualcosa di fine a sé stesso. Non sono invidioso dei pittori che espongono, anzi ammiro molto la loro grande abilità nel dipingere miniature, e non nego nemmeno di aver partecipato a qualche gara di pittura nel negozio GW dove normalmente vado, ma innanzitutto non sono un pittore così bravo e poi il fine della mia pittura non è quello di esporre. Certo, anch’io impiego molto tempo per dipingere al meglio delle mie capacità gli eroi o le squadre più importanti delle mie armate, però si tratta comunque di personaggi che fanno parte di in un esercito. Se la mia tecnica migliorerà al punto da avvicinarsi un po’ di più a quella dei migliori pittori, forse anch’io potrei dipingere qualche pezzo da esporre in alcuni concorsi, ma per ora la mia strada è ancora lunga.

Even though now I am an enthusiast hobby modeller, you have to know that, actually, hobby exhibitions are something quite new for me. Of course, I know some important events such as Torino Comics, Lucca Comics, Euro Roma, Monte San Savino, Stresa and other important exhibitions in France, in Germany or in the United States, but either because of my lack of interest or because of my lack of money I have never been to one of those events. So, why did I change my mind? As many other hobby modellers and players, I started collecting miniatures when I was a teenager, then because of school and because I practised a sport at a competitive level I haven’t had the chance to continue this hobby and unfortunately I neglected my miniatures for nearly ten years. About four years ago, as witnessed by the White Dwarf issued in November 2012 on my shelf, the interest for the different aspects of this hobby came out of the fog again, especially the parts that concern caring the assembly of models and painting them. There is no doubt that these two aspects are less pleasant than the background or playing a game, but we have to notice that they are strictly linked to each other, because every style of painting will benefit from removing all the moulding lines. Now, we can discuss about the main theme of this article: hobby exhibitions and fairs. In our case, we are certainly talking about static hobby modelling, but I think that having the chance to visit some dynamic hobby modelling fairs (especially railway hobby modelling fairs) would be very interesting too, especially because you may find some inspiration for building terrain pieces or you may buy some high quality material for decorating models’ bases.

Every year, in many countries of the world there is a series of hobby modelling exhibitions where lots of painters expose their miniatures, divided in categories and judged by a panel of experts. We all know that the most important competition for the sole Citadel miniatures is the Golden Daemon organised by Games Workshop, which assigns medals for different categories and the prize that every painter craves, the Slayer sword. However, the world of our hobby is mainly composed by modellers who gather in small associations and who organise those exhibitions. At the beginning of October, the exhibition called “Modellismo che passione” organised by Centro Modellistico Torinese was hold in CH4 sports club (http://www.cmtonline.it/cmtonline.it/Benvenuto.html) in Turin. Unfortunately, finding fliers about this event was quite difficult for those people who are not involved in this hobby, but I think it was very interesting and very instructive.

As I said, I had not visited neither a modelling exhibition nor a big event, so it was my very first time, but the painting demonstration hold by a CMT painter that I know (Marco Bosio) and the exhibition of some models painted by another great painter that I know (Antonio Bello) really encouraged me to go to the exhibition. I could imagine that I would have seen many different scales miniatures painted at a very high level, but I must admit that there were dozens of incredible miniatures and I would have spent hours observing each one of them for discovering their details. This is why the first piece of advice that I would like to give you is to bring a camera with a good flash unit and a good zoom, because lights are often not very bright and you have to remain at a certain distance from miniatures in order to avoid any damage.

Somebody may think that exhibitions organised by local associations cannot attract enough painter, so it is not worth visiting them, but they are often wrong. Painters came from every part of Piemonte, Lombardia and even from France to take part to the exhibition, with a few hundreds of models exposed.

This sort of exhibition can frequently offer inspiration for new projects and they can also widen the perspective of hobby modellers for many reasons. First of all, there is the chance to meet painters and chatting with them about painting techniques, colour theories and methods for converting miniatures. Secondly, you may know new miniature producers (models, busts or vehicles), new colour producers, producers of material for decorating models’ bases or dioramas, and artisans who produce any type of exhibition base. Finally, and above all, you will have the chance to look for some good deal in the stands. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for a book concerning painting techniques or a model’s box, it is not rare to find a good deal with a moderate price. Basically, I visited my first exhibition with this view, because I think that, honestly, painting a single model for exhibition is not for me. As I said previously and as I show in my pictures and in my articles, I really enjoy painting miniatures and I would like to paint other producers’ models. But, since my concept of hobby modelling is linked to the idea of using models for a game, I think that painting a model just for the sake of exhibition ends in itself. I am not envious of painters who expose their miniatures, on the contrary, I admire their great ability in painting, and I cannot deny that I took part to some painting competitions in my local GW store, but I am not such a good painter and the sake of my painting is not exhibition. Certainly, I always try to do my best for painting heroes or the main units of my armies, and it takes a quite long time, but we are always talking about characters that belong to an army, not just single models. If my technique will improve so much to reach the level of exhibition painters, maybe one day I would paint some miniatures for an exhibition, but for now, my path is still long.

每年都，在很多世界国家，有一些缩微雕塑的展览，那里有太多涂家露出他们涂料的缩微雕塑。每个缩微雕塑的类型得到专家为会员的评审。我们都知道Citadel缩微雕塑的最主要比赛是被Games Workshop主办的Golden Daemon。在Golden Daemon，每个类型有三个奖牌获得者与最切望的一般奖品：Slayer sword。可是我们爱好的世界是被爱好者的小组合组织的，然后缩微雕塑展览的最大部分是被这种组合主办的。十月初，在都灵，Centro Modellistico Torinese主办了第二十届 “Modellismo che passione”展览。可惜，找到和这种展览有关的传单不太容易，可是我觉得去参观那个缩微雕塑的展览很有意思，以及有教育意义。

我刚刚说以前我没参观缩微雕塑展览，所以这是我的首次参观这种展览，可是我还应该说一位CMT涂家(Marco Bosio) 的涂料表演，以及别的涂家(Antonio Bello) 的暴露缩微雕塑鼓励我去参观。我能想象可以看见涂得很好的不一样规模缩微雕塑真多，可是我要承认涂得很好的缩微雕塑太多的，我可能度过很长时间看它们发现每个详细。那么我想劝告你们带一台照相机。一般来说，因为在展览场所灯火不太强烈闪关灯，照相机闪光灯越强越好，然后因为常常应从缩微雕塑保持一个距离，照相机变焦的能力越强越好。

谁可以觉得小组织主办的展览不能吸引足够参观者，所以比值得注意，可是他们常常有错误的思想。一来，可以见面涂家，跟他们谈谈涂料手法、颜色理论、变更缩微雕塑的办法。二来，可以认识新缩微雕塑厂商（俑、人物像、车辆）、新颜色生产者、布置缩微雕塑底子资料的新生产者。最后，在售货厅可以搜索什么交易。无论是一本和涂料手法有关的书或者一个缩微雕塑的盒子，常常可以碰到较便宜的很好产品。那么，按照这个看法我参观了这个展览，因为句句实话我觉得只涂一个展览的缩微雕塑对我不合适。根据我上述的话、我发表的文章与照片,我很喜欢涂缩微雕塑，我也想试一试涂别的生产者的缩微雕塑，可是因为我的爱好基本概念还包含用缩微雕塑打游戏的念头，我觉得只为展览而涂料一个缩微雕塑的意义不太大。我不忌妒别展览涂家的才能，否则我佩服他们涂料缩微雕塑的能力，还应该说我不可以否认在都灵的GW商店我参加一些涂料比赛，可是我不是那么人才的涂家，以及我涂料的目的不是暴露我的缩微雕塑。当然，涂料我军队的英雄或者最重要的部队的时候我力求得到好效果，但那是全部军队的一个人物，不是单一的缩微雕塑。如果我会培养的涂料能力到很人才的涂家一样，有可能我要涂一些展览的缩微吊索，可是我的道路还很长。
