Come ho fatto
dare qualche informazione.
Personalmente, uso diversi pennelli.
precedente e solo uno dell’attuale gamma in commercio.
Newton (serie 7, numero 1 e numero 2).

Once
again, I apologize if it took a long time to publish this article, but my job
and a few painting commissions only left me some time to note down a few topics
for the articles I’d like to write soon. Anyway, with this article we are
inaugurating a little column about essential tools for our hobby, and without a
doubt brushes are among the most important utensils.
Obviously,
there are different brushes for different techniques, though manufacturers
often decide to give their brushes particular features. For example, we can
compare some Games Workshop’s brushes with a few Army Painter’s brushes. There
are many Army Painter’s brushes of the drybrush range whose bristles have the
diagonal profile that GW gave to its Base range brushes, while the bristles of the
complete new range of GW drybrush brushes have a flat profile.
Starting
from this technique, drybrush, I think that the main feature of the brush
should be the resilience of its bristles. Rubbing the bristles on a piece of
paper and flicking the brush to apply the colour can consume the bristles quite
quickly. This is why using brushes with pure synthetic bristles will be
suitable for this technique, and the only care you should have is to wash the
brush with liquid soap and cold water at the end of your painting session.
Choose the brush with the bristle profile you prefer (flat, round, diagonal),
just apply very few colour every time.
Apart
from the classic little piece of sponge, I have recently discovered a faster
way to create the effect of weathering or dirt that is normally applied on
vehicles. Fan brushes are used in different fields: frame gilding, canvas
painting to create blends and also in face makeup again to create blends. The
feature of this brush can be deduced from its name, in fact the bristles are
disposed like a fan to create a flat and wide surface. With such a brush you
can create the effect of rust or dirt trickling from vehicles’ rivets in a very
quick way: take a drop of diluted colour or wash with a first brush, apply it
on one or more rivets, then take the fan brush and drag the colour towards one
direction. This is a simple technique, but I think that the final result is
very natural.
Another
very useful type of tool is the silicone brush. They have different sizes and
shapes, and they are used for sculpting different types of malleable materials,
from clay to the most common hobby modelling resins (such as green stuff,
milliput, fimo, das and others). I use this type of brushes in my sculpting
attempts, but I also use them to let the masking tape adhere in those points I
can’t reach with my fingers. Moreover, there are some silicone brushes with
very fine tips that are used to put the makeup around the eyes, but they are
perfect even for us hobby modellers. These brushes can be very handy to sketch
the outlines of a freehand drawing or motif. Because of its lack of bristles,
using a little silicone brush would let you trace a line with a uniform
thickness even on irregular surfaces (i.e. a cloak or an armour). Personally, I
am slowly getting closer to freehand drawing, but I think that such a tool is
very useful for both expert painters and amateur painters.
Finally,
let’s try to clear up the most complicated issue: which brush or which brushes
should we use to apply base colours and the following diluted layers? As I did
previously, I will necessarily talk about brands, but my purpose is not
fostering the use of one brand to the detriment of another one. Then, we should
also say that the choice of a brush is something extremely personal, so if a
certain feature may be good for a painter, the same characteristic may not be
good for another one. Anyway, every painter should choose a brush that fits his
or her characteristics and to let people choose it is fair to give some
information.
Personally. I use many brushes. Among
them, the majority is GW’s brushes, but I bought some of them more than ten
years ago, others belong to the previous range and only one belongs to the
latest range. I bought some other brushes at the supermarket or even at the
market, but I also have two Winsor Newton brushes (series 7 number 1 and number
2). I think that synthetic bristle brushes to paint base colours and to give
the models a wash are enough, but they have to be suit the wideness of the
surface you are painting. Once I finished painting the base colours and I gave
the model a wash, I switch to Winsor Newton brushes to continue painting the
model with thin layers or glazes until I complete it. I know that Da Vinci
brushes or GW’s Artificier Layer brushes are compared to Winsor Newton ones,
but actually I can’t make a fair comparison to say which is the better. I can
only say that I prefer to use brushes with long bristles that grants me a
capacious reservoir. Since I always try to use well diluted colours to
construct the light, it is often necessary to paint a few layers before the
colour starts to become visible. So, a capacious reservoir, on the one hand,
lets me refill the brush less frequently, on the other hand, grants me a little
more time to work on the surface I am painting. A short bristles brush is good
for little surfaces, for larger ones you just have to refill the brush more
frequently. Apart from brands and apart from the type of bristles, the
essential feature for a brush is its capacity of keeping a thin tip, and then a
constant practice will do the rest. According to this, let’s talk about one of
the painters that I follow, Sam Lenz. Of course, we are talking about a very
talented, full time painter who won the Golden Demon award and the Crystal
Brush award several times, but he himself declared that he normally uses cheap
brushes with a good tip. Check his blog in the list of links on the left and
you will understand better what I am talking about.
That’s all for now. Any question, suggestion or
consideration, please write them in the comments. If you liked the article,
share it and don’t forget to work on always new projects while the wash is
drying (MentreLaLavaturaAsciuga).
Games
Winsor
Newton笔(series 7 number 1 and number 2)。 Winsor
Winsor
Lenz。 Golden
