Montato o smontato? – Assembled or not assembled? –
Altri
Innanzitutto,
modello.
Fanti/eroi
a piedi
In
Warhammer Fantasy/Age of Sigmar, Warhammer 40000 e Lo Hobbit/Signore degli
drago, elmi d’argento, cavalieri neri, cavalcaragni, cavalcalupi, flagellanti
cavaliere.
senza problemi dopo aver completato l’assemblaggio.
Veicoli/Macchine
Iniziamo
dai veicoli di Warhammer 40000. Credo che carri armati come rhino, razorback,
whirlwind, stalker, land raider, chimera, lehman russ, hydra, tutti i volanti
portelli verranno aperti.
In

A
lot of painters haven’t got the same answers to these two questions: should we
assemble the whole model before painting it or should we paint it before the
final assembly? And, above all, should we glue the model to the base? Well, it
depends, because there are many factors that influence these choices.
To
begin with, we can distinguish between: infantry/heroes on foot, knights, large
models and vehicles/war machines. Each one of these categories has its own
characteristics that have to be considered before we start painting a model.
Infantry/heroes
on foot
In Warhammer Fantasy/Age of Sigmar, Warhammer
40000 and The Hobbit/Lord of the rings this type of models constitutes the
heart of many players’ army, while in Malifaux they represent the majority of
each guild’s models. The main characteristic to consider is the character’s stance,
which can be more open or more closed no matter the dynamism of the model. For
example, models like: temple guards, liberators, ironbreakers, hammerers,
eternal guard, dwarf warriors, saurus warriors, dreadspears, Chakax, chaos
warriors, clanrats, night runners, chaos raiders, nogors, Crom the conqueror,
ork shaman, crypt ghouls, galadhrim, Rohan warriors all have a quite closed
stance, because of different reasons: a shield, a two-handed weapon, the
running position, and the small size (especially for Skaven and Dwarves) which
can be mixed with one of the previous reasons. The same ca be found in some
Malifaux models, such as Brewmaster or Yan Lo. The first is a gremlin holding a
long stick with the hands, the second is a wizard that is bringing back to life
a corpse (the stance reminds that of the Vampire Counts’ necromancer). The more
closed the stance, the more difficult it will be reaching the hidden parts, so
it would be better to keep the model unassembled and even separated from the
base. On the contrary, the more opened the stance, the easier it will be
painting the assembled model. Although, it is not always like this, because a
model such as the Eldar’s autarch, with an opened stance, it also has a very
wide mantle. As a consequence of that, it is necessary to keep the mantle
separated from the body in order to easily reach both the rear of the model and
the interior of the mantle.
Somebody may think that, once the model is
assembled, the parts that can’t be reached by the brush don’t deserve to be
painted (and it might be true), but as it takes just a few more time to reach
them, why shouldn’t we try?
Knights
This
category includes different types of troop, some with a simpler aspect (boar
boyz, chaos knights, chaos marauders, Lizardmen and Dark Elves naggaron
knights, dragon princes, silver elms, black knights, goblin on spiders or
wolves, hellstriders, demonettes on Slaanesh steed, Eldar jetbikes, Space
Marines bikes, Ork bikes), others with a more powerful aspect (skullcrushers,
Varanguard, Gore-gruntas, mournfang cavalry, bloodletters on juggernaut, blood
knights, knights on demigryphon), and heroes (their steed may go from a simple
horse to a dragon, a phoenix or a huge stag beetle). it doesn’t matter the size
of the steed, because in any case we are in front of two models and once again
we have to consider the stance of the raider in combination with its steed.
Miniatures such as boar boys, Lizardmen naggaron knights, bloodletters on
juggernaut, dragon princes and Dark Elves naggaron knights probably will have
to be unassembled for painting. This is because in the first three cases the
knights are crouched on their steeds, while in the last two examples the
shields cover a large portion on the left side of the model. In other
situations, keeping just one element separated from the others is enough, like
the banner in both chaos knights and skullcrushers. A few models, such as
demonettes on Slaanesh steeds and hellstriders, can be painted after the
complete assembly because they have a quite opened stance and small-sized
shields.
Large
models
Again,
we can find different types of troop, such as ogres, yhetees, stormfiend,
morghasts and very big heroes like Nagash,
Celestant Prime, Thanquol, Durthu, Drycha Hamadreth, Greater demons, Balrog,
the Glottkin, Cygor, Verminlord, Muthalith, Giant,l Mumak and any other
Warhammer 40000 monstrous creature’s model. All these models can draw the
attention because of their size and because of the large amount of details they
often have. Normally, it’s not necessary keeping the model unassembled for
painting, but I think that for some of the most recently produced characters
(such as Nagash or Celestant Prime) it’s absolutely necessary painting them
before the final assembly, in this way all the details on their armours and on
the support structures can be exalted.
Personally, the sole large model I have
painted, until now, is a Forgeworld Plague Hulk. Generally speaking, Forgeworld
models require a few more passages than plastic models (such as washing all the
resin parts), but even though they are normally highly detailed, those models
can be painted after the final assembly.
Vehicles/War machines
In this category, we can no longer talk about
a stance (unless there are some characters), ma we can talk about surfaces that
are aither easy or difficult to reach.
Let’s start from Warhammer 40000 vehicles. I
think that tanks such as rhino, razorback, whirlwind, stalker, land raider,
chimera, lehman russ, hydra, all the fliers and the baneblade can be painted
after the final assembly, unless you want to paint the internal parts that will
be shown after the doors’ opening. Other vehicles like the vindicator,
dreadnoughts, dreadknights, the gorkonaut and the imperial knight should be
painted before the assembly because it would be too difficult to reach all the
details below the armour panels and the dozer blade. Furthermore, all these
models have wide surfaces, excellent for freehand designs.
Finally, since the majority of the miniatures
of WHFB/AoS are inspired by a fantasy world that reminds the Middle Age, most
of the war machines are very similar to the real ones. Think about many Skaven
warmachines, Ork chariots or Beastmen chariots. In the cover image on anyone of
my social media you can see that on my painting station there is a Skaven bell.
Actually, I modified it to make a Nurgle warshrine, but in order to paint it I
had to keep all the components separated before assembling it and pinning it on
the base.
I know that probably I spent too many words
on this topic, but I believe that it’s important to remind again that all these
pieces of information are just advice that can be accepted, ignored, or adapted
to your painting method. Anyway, don’t take for granted that the higher the
ability of the painter, the easier it will be painting a completely assembled
model.
That’s all for now. Any question, suggestion or
consideration, please write them in the comments. If you liked the article,

drying (MentreLaLavaturaAsciuga)
Warhammer Fantasy/Age of Sigmar, Warhammer
The Hobbit/Lord of the rings里这是很多玩家的部队中心,却在Malifaux里这种微缩雕塑代表每个会社的大多数微缩雕塑。 比如temple guards、liberators、ironbreakers、hammerers、eternal guard、dwarf
warriors、saurus warriors、dreadspears、Chakax、chaos
warriors、clanrats、night
runners、chaos raiders、nogors、Crom the conqueror、ork
Brewmaster
knights、chaos marauders、Lizardmen
and Dark Elves naggaron knights、dragon princes、silver
elms、black knights、goblin on spiders or wolves、hellstriders、demonettes
on Slaanesh steed、Eldar jetbikes、Space Marines bikes、Ork
cavalry、bloodletters on juggernaut、blood
Boar
boys、Lizardmen
naggaron knights、bloodletters
on juggernaut、dragon
princes和Dark
